The Maldives is a year-round destination, with temperatures around 30 degrees most of the time. December through to April are the driest months, making it the perfect time for those wanting to spend all day on the white sand. May to November brings the south-west monsoon, which means more rain – although it tends to clear fairly quickly. If you’re diving, the western atolls will have the best visibility during the south-west monsoon, while the eastern atolls attract manta rays.

For full information on entry requirements please visit the FCO Travel Advice or contact your relevant embassy

A 10% service tax is added to bills in most hotels, restaurants and bars. If a tip hasn’t been included, consider leaving 10-15%.

In the Maldives the power plugs and sockets are the same as standard UK three pin plugs (type G). 220V / 50Hz

The official language of the Maldives is Dhivehi. English is widely spoken too, so getting by is easy.

You can’t go to the Maldives without tasting the ultra-fresh, succulent local seafood. Treat yourself to marinated lobster or chargrilled king prawns. Sit down to salty snapper or chunky tuna steak, served with lentil-based side dishes or steamed rice and vegetables. Also used in a variety of traditional curries, you’ll find chicken and beef on the menu too. Creamy, spicy and flavoured with coconut, these dishes are served with rice, roshi (an unleavened bread) and papadhu, Maldivian poppadoms.

In resort, a wide variety of international cuisine is available, often with individual restaurants offering a specific cuisine from different regions. Prices of food vary from resort to resort and can either be part of an all inclusive, full board or half board package.

Which Maldives Island to stay at?

After flying into the Maldives capital, Male, you will see the islands laid out below you like a giant Maldives map. Be aware though that the country spreads over 500 miles from north to south and another flight, seaplane transfer, or speedboat transfer is often required from Male to reach your resort.

Maldives resorts stretch the entire length of the 26 atolls so transfer time is an important consideration when choosing.
